CHEUNG SING SAM, passenger on S.S. "Hong Hwa", states:-

I am a shopcoolie at the Cheung Pak medicine shop at Ma Sha Street, Singapore. I have been in Singapore for 5 years. I came by this ship (lower deck) by myself to Svetow via Hongkong.

I recognise 3 of the pirates who were travelling by the same ship. They slept beside me in the lower deck. At about 08.00 hours on the 13th January, 1925, I heard many reports of firearms from the upper deck. The three pirates who slept beside me got up at once. and ran to the upper deck. Immediately afterwards they came down into the tween deck again with 4 or 5 other pirates armed with a revolver each. They ordered us not to shout or they would kill all of us. They searched me and the other passengers. I lost $90 in Singapore Bank Notes, $16 and $5 notes, two suits of white. pongee silk clothing value $9, two pairs of black and brown leather shoes value $10. Five pirates kept guard on us for three days.

Description of pirates:-

(1) About 30 years of age, tall, medium build, dressed in dark clothing, waring shoes, socks and grey felt hat.

(2) About 18 years of age, short and of medium build, dressed in grey cotton clothing, wearing shoes and socks.

(3) About 30 years of age, medium height and build, dressed in grey cotton clothing, wearing shoes, black socks and black felt hat. They can sperk Punti, Hakka, Chiu Chau and Fukien dialecta.
